Spice Up Your Chicken Soup

First, let’s start by saying that traditional chicken soup is perfect and delicious. A traditional chicken soup recipe passed down by your grandparents and great grandparents probably doesn’t need fixing. However, it’s okay to play with a recipe by adding ingredients that spice it up and make it more interesting. Have fun with your chicken soup with these delicious ideas.

#1 Garlic

Surprisingly, many traditional chicken soup recipes leave out this tasty, and healthy, ingredient. When you’re making chicken soup at home, Add teaspoon of garlic powder or a few crushed garlic cloves to your broth before you add the chicken, vegetables, and noodles. It will add a nice kick to your soup, and garlic is great for boosting your immune system and lowering blood pressure.

#2 Lemon Pepper Seasoning

For a different twist on chicken soup add a teaspoon of lemon pepper seasoning. It gives your soup a kick and is great with egg noodles. It clears out your sinuses too. You can add both the lemon pepper and some garlic for a spicy combination.

#3 Old Bay Seasoning

If you like Cajun flavors then consider adding one and a half tablespoons of Old Bay seasoning to your traditional chicken soup recipe. Then taste to see if you want to add more – one and a half tablespoons is a good starting point. If you like your soup extra flavorful then gradually add more and re-taste until you find the amount that works for you.

#4 Herbs Galore

If you have access to fresh herbs you can add a powerful flavor punch to your traditional soup recipe. Try adding fresh:

  • Dill
  • Parsley
  • Thyme
  • Rosemary

Add the herbs to the broth and let simmer for an hour before adding the remainder of your ingredients.

#5 Root Vegetables

Another way, albeit a milder one, is to add root vegetables to your traditional chicken soup. Consider adding parsnips, sweet potatoes, or fennel to your soup recipe. This is a great way to kick you chicken soup up a notch during the winter when these vegetables are readily available.

#6 Onions, Leeks, and Ramps

Onions are part of many traditional soup recipes. However, leeks and wild garlic (or ramps) add a nice touch to spring chicken soups. Start small. Add one leek or a few ramps to test the flavor. You can always add more the next time you cook.

#7 Mexican Chicken Soup

If you love Mexican flavors consider adding:

  • Jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced
  • Ground cumin
  • Ground coriander seed
  • Chopped fresh cilantro leaves tossed on top of the soup as a garnish.

Adjust the heat level to your liking. You may want to start with two jalapenos, a teaspoon of cumin and a teaspoon of coriander.

It just takes a little imagination and a desire to branch out. You can turn your traditional chicken soup recipe into a spicy household favorite.
